If GPT-6 Astra is not showing in ChatGPT, the most likely explanation
is the gradual rollout—not a problem with your account or device. OpenAI
introduced Astra on September 3, 2026, but said access would begin with
a limited group of organizations before expanding to ChatGPT Plus, Pro,
Business and Enterprise users over the following days. Enterprise
administrators must also enable Astra because it is switched off by
default at launch.
There is no official indication that Germany, the United Kingdom or
the United States has a separate release date. Availability may
therefore differ between two users in the same country while OpenAI
activates accounts in stages.
Why GPT-6 Astra may not
appear yet
1. The rollout has
not reached your account
OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes say Astra is not yet generally
available and that broader access is planned over the coming days. This
means an eligible colleague or friend may receive the model before you
do, even when you have the same subscription.
A missing model during a staged rollout is not evidence that your
browser, computer or account is broken. OpenAI has not published a
precise hour when every eligible account will receive access.
2. Your ChatGPT
plan is not listed as eligible
OpenAI currently names ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise as
the plans receiving Astra. The announcement does not include the Free
plan. If you use ChatGPT Free, waiting, reinstalling the app or changing
browsers will not create access unless OpenAI expands eligibility
later.
Paid access is also not necessarily immediate. Being subscribed to
Plus or another eligible plan means the model is included in the
announced rollout, not that it must already appear in your model
picker.
3. Your
workspace administrator has not enabled it
For Enterprise workspaces, Astra is disabled by default at launch. An
administrator must enable it for the workspace before members can use
it.
If you are using a company or managed account, contact the workspace
owner before troubleshooting your device. Local browser changes cannot
override an organization-level model setting.
4. You are
checking a different OpenAI product
ChatGPT, the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock are separate
access routes. OpenAI says Astra will become available through all four,
but availability in one product does not prove that it has reached
another.
For developers, the announced API model identifier is
gpt-6-astra. API access and usage are billed separately
from a normal ChatGPT subscription. OpenAI lists standard API pricing of
$10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, with
separate rates for cached tokens and faster processing.
5. The model list has not
refreshed
Once the rollout reaches your account, a stale browser session or
outdated mobile app may delay what you see. This is worth checking only
after confirming that your plan or workspace is eligible.
Try opening a new chat and checking the model selector again. You can
also refresh the browser, restart the official ChatGPT app or sign out
and back in once. Repeating these steps every few minutes will not
accelerate a server-side rollout.
Is GPT-6
Astra available in Germany, the UK and the US?
As of September 5, OpenAI’s announcement does not provide different
schedules for Germany, the UK or the US. The reasonable interpretation
is that access is being activated by account and plan rather than
through three publicly announced country launch dates.
| Location | Official status as of September 5, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Germany | Rolling out to the eligible paid plans named by OpenAI |
| United Kingdom | Rolling out to the eligible paid plans named by OpenAI |
| United States | Rolling out to the eligible paid plans named by OpenAI |
This does not guarantee simultaneous availability. Regional
infrastructure, workspace controls and staged account activation can
still produce different experiences, but OpenAI has not announced a
Germany-specific, UK-specific or US-specific waiting period.
Using a VPN is therefore not a reliable fix. It can create new login
or security problems without changing whether Astra has been enabled for
your account.
How to check
whether you should have access
Use this order:
- Confirm that you are signed into the intended ChatGPT account.
- Check whether the account uses Plus, Pro, Business or
Enterprise. - Open a new conversation and inspect the model selector.
- If it is a managed Enterprise workspace, ask the administrator
whether Astra has been enabled. - Refresh ChatGPT or restart the mobile app once.
- If the model is still absent, wait for the staged rollout rather
than changing unrelated settings.
Users who are new to the interface can follow our ChatGPT
beginner’s guide for the basic account and model-selection workflow.
If the model appears but documents will not upload, use these ChatGPT
file-upload fixes instead; that is a separate problem from model
availability.
What changes when
Astra becomes available?
OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as a major upgrade for computer use,
browsing, software engineering, research and professional work. It is
designed to handle longer, multi-step tasks and create polished
documents, spreadsheets, presentations and websites while following
existing templates.
The release also introduces stronger safety monitoring. OpenAI says
some tool-based actions may be paused or stopped if the system detects a
possible mismatch between the user’s instructions and the model’s
actions. A paused task does not necessarily mean the model is
unavailable; it can be a safety review during use.
Usage is included within existing subscription allowances for
eligible plans. OpenAI also says users and businesses will be able to
purchase additional credits. Exact limits may vary by plan and should be
checked inside the account once access appears.
Should you upgrade just to
get Astra?
Do not upgrade solely because another user already has access. A paid
subscription makes an account eligible under the announced rollout, but
it does not guarantee immediate activation at the moment of payment.
Upgrade only if the broader plan already fits your needs. If your
main tasks are ordinary questions, summaries and light writing, your
current model may remain sufficient. Astra is more relevant for complex
research, coding, computer-use workflows and professional deliverables
where stronger multi-step execution can save substantial time.
The bottom line
GPT-6 Astra not showing in ChatGPT is usually a rollout or
account-eligibility issue. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users are
included in OpenAI’s announced expansion, but access is arriving
gradually. Enterprise users may also need an administrator to switch it
on.
There is no confirmed special delay for Germany, the UK or the US.
Check your plan and workspace settings, refresh once, and then wait for
the rollout. A VPN, repeated reinstallations or password resets will not
force Astra onto an account that has not been activated.
