Gemini Is Now in Your Car — Here’s What It Can Access and What You Can Control

Gemini is becoming much more than a replacement for Google Assistant.

Google has now made Gemini available globally in Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, and the bigger change is something called Personal Intelligence. With permission, Gemini can use information from Google services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search while helping you in the car.

That sounds genuinely useful to me, but it also immediately raises a more important question:

Exactly what can Gemini see, and how much control do I have over it?

What Changed in Android Auto?

Gemini can now act as the conversational assistant inside supported cars instead of relying only on the older Google Assistant experience.

I can speak naturally instead of remembering specific voice commands.

For example, Gemini can already help with common driving tasks such as:

  • making calls
  • sending messages
  • finding places
  • starting navigation
  • controlling music
  • answering general questions

Google says Android Auto users need an Android phone with at least Android 11 and 2 GB of RAM, Gemini set as the digital assistant, and a vehicle that supports Android Auto. Cars with Google built-in can use Gemini directly when it is enabled in the vehicle settings.

That alone is a useful upgrade.

But Personal Intelligence is what makes this much more interesting.

What Is Gemini Personal Intelligence in a Car?

Personal Intelligence allows Gemini to use information from Google services you already use to give more personal answers.

Google says that, with permission, Gemini can connect information from:

  • Google Workspace, including Gmail and Google Calendar
  • Google Photos
  • Google Maps
  • YouTube
  • Google Search

The idea is that I should not have to manually explain information Gemini can already find in one of my connected services.

For example, Google gives the example of asking Gemini:

“What’s my flight gate? And is my flight on time?”

Gemini can retrieve the booking information from an email and combine it with current flight information instead of making me search Gmail while I am driving.

That is where this starts feeling significantly different from the traditional in-car voice assistant.

Can Gemini Read My Gmail While I Drive?

Potentially, yes — if you allow Google Workspace to be connected to Personal Intelligence.

That does not mean Gemini is simply reading your entire inbox aloud in the background.

Instead, it can retrieve relevant information from connected services when that information helps answer your request.

For example, I could imagine asking:

“What time is my hotel check-in?”

If the confirmation is stored in Gmail, Gemini may be able to find that information without me opening the email manually.

Google specifically lists Workspace, including Gmail and Google Calendar, as one of the services Personal Intelligence can use.

For me, this is probably one of the most useful parts of the entire update.

It is also the part where I would spend a few minutes checking the privacy settings before using it.

What Can Gemini Do With Google Maps?

Maps integration makes much more sense in a car.

Gemini can already help find locations and start navigation, but Personal Intelligence can add context based on information stored in your Google services.

Google gives another interesting example.

You could ask Gemini to find a restaurant along your route that matches places you usually like.

Instead of treating every search as if it came from a completely new user, Gemini can use information connected to your account to give a more personalized recommendation.

Cars with Google built-in can go even further because Google works directly with manufacturers on vehicle integration.

Google says Gemini can answer questions specific to the car in supported models, including helping identify a dashboard warning light or answering whether an object you are picking up is likely to fit in the vehicle. Availability depends on the manufacturer and vehicle.

Can Gemini Access Google Photos in the Car?

Google lists Google Photos among the services that can connect to Personal Intelligence.

That means Gemini can potentially use information stored in your photo library when answering an appropriate request, provided you have enabled the connection and the feature is available to your account.

This is an area where I would be careful about overestimating what the system can do.

Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence, and availability can vary.

I would not assume every Google Photos feature available in the Gemini app will immediately work exactly the same way through every Android Auto vehicle.

Does Gemini Automatically Get Access to Everything?

No.

This is an important distinction.

Google says Personal Intelligence connects to your information with your permission, and you can manage which supported apps are connected.

In Gemini’s Connected Apps settings, users can connect or disconnect supported services individually.

For Personal Intelligence, Google currently lists controls for services including Google Photos, Google Workspace, Search services and YouTube.

So if I want Gemini to use Maps and Search but do not want it using information from Workspace, I can manage those connections separately.

That is much better than treating the feature as one giant “AI access” switch.

How to Stop Gemini From Accessing a Connected App

Google allows Connected Apps to be disconnected at any time.

On Android, the current path is generally:

Gemini app → Menu → Profile → Personal Intelligence → Connected Apps

From there, I can turn individual supported services on or off.

Google also provides a broader Connected Apps section where apps can be added or disconnected.

Once an app is disconnected, Gemini should no longer use private information from that connected service through that connection.

There is one caveat.

Google says Gemini may still use public information from services such as Search or YouTube even when those services are disconnected from Personal Intelligence.

So disconnecting an app does not necessarily mean Gemini suddenly stops knowing anything that originated from that Google service. It means it stops using the connected personal data through that Personal Intelligence connection.

What Data Does Gemini Use in Cars With Google Built-In?

Google provides more detail for vehicles with Google built-in.

Depending on the feature, Gemini may use information such as:

  • your conversations with Gemini
  • the vehicle’s location
  • the current navigation route
  • information from connected apps

For requests involving third-party apps, Google says parts of the request may be shared with that service to complete the task. Those third-party services then handle the data according to their own privacy policies.

That is worth understanding.

If I ask Gemini to send a message or control another service, some information obviously has to move between Gemini and that service for the action to work.

Can I Delete Gemini Activity From the Car?

In cars with Google built-in, Google says users can manage Gemini activity from the vehicle’s privacy settings.

The available controls include viewing or deleting conversation history and managing connected apps.

Google also says users can delete Gemini activity through their Google account.

So using Gemini in a car does not mean giving up all control of the conversation history.

Can I Disable Gemini Completely?

On Android phones, Google still allows users to change their default digital assistant.

That means if I decide I do not want Gemini as my main assistant, I can switch the default assistant or select no digital assistant at all.

Google also provides separate controls for disabling “Hey Google,” changing how the power button launches the assistant and preventing Gemini from being used from the lock screen.

Cars with Google built-in have their own settings, which can differ depending on the manufacturer.

Google explicitly warns that availability, settings and functionality can vary by vehicle brand, region and language.

Is Gemini Replacing Google Assistant in Android Auto?

In practice, Google is clearly moving its car experience toward Gemini.

Gemini now handles conversational assistance in Android Auto and supported cars with Google built-in, while Google continues expanding deeper integrations around Maps and vehicle-specific information.

The important difference is that Gemini is designed to handle much more natural, multi-step questions.

Google Assistant was excellent at commands such as:

“Navigate home.”

Gemini is moving toward requests such as:

“Find the address from my hotel booking, tell me how long it will take to get there and find somewhere to eat near the hotel.”

That is a much more useful assistant model for a car, because I do not want to interact with five different apps while driving.

What I Like About This Update

I think this is one of the areas where an AI assistant actually makes practical sense.

I am not particularly interested in having Gemini generate essays while I am driving.

But being able to ask one question that combines Gmail, Maps and current information could genuinely reduce the amount of time I spend touching my phone.

That is exactly where voice AI should be useful.

The convenience comes with a trade-off, though.

The more useful Gemini becomes, the more personal context it potentially needs access to.

For me, the correct approach would be to enable only the Connected Apps I actually need instead of automatically giving every available service access.

What I Don’t Like

My biggest concern is not that Gemini exists in the car.

It is that users may activate Personal Intelligence without really understanding how much more capable the assistant becomes when Gmail, Calendar, Photos and other services are connected.

Google does provide controls, which is important.

But most people do not spend much time checking AI privacy settings after turning a new feature on.

I think Google needs to continue making those controls extremely obvious inside the car and the Gemini app.

There is another limitation too.

Availability is still fragmented.

Gemini and Android Auto features can vary by country, language, vehicle and manufacturer, so one person may see features that another user does not yet have.

Bottom Line

Gemini is now available globally across Android Auto and supported cars with Google built-in, and Google’s new Personal Intelligence layer can make the assistant much more personal.

With permission, Gemini can use information from services including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search to answer more contextual questions while you are driving.

The important part is that this access is configurable.

I can choose which supported services are connected and disconnect them later if I do not want Gemini using their personal data.

For me, that makes Gemini in Android Auto much more interesting than simply replacing Google Assistant.

The real change is not that Google put another chatbot in the dashboard.

It is that the assistant can finally start connecting information from different parts of my digital life while I keep my hands on the wheel.

And that makes the privacy settings almost as important as the AI itself.
