Short answer: The iPhone Duo is the better fit for people who want a foldable without leaving Apple’s ecosystem, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 currently offers more mature multitasking and a slightly lower starting price. Both use a 7.6-inch inner display, but Samsung gives power users more flexible multi-window tools, while Apple focuses on a more tightly integrated iOS experience.
TechJournalAI has not hands-on tested the iPhone Duo yet. This comparison is based on current official Apple and Samsung specifications plus early independent hands-on coverage.
Price: Samsung starts cheaper
Apple’s iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US and €2,299 in Germany for 256GB. Pre-orders begin October 16, with availability from October 23.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,899.99 in the US, €1,999 in Germany, and £1,699 in the UK. It is already available.
That makes Samsung roughly $100 cheaper in the US and €300 cheaper in Germany at base price.
For price alone, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has the advantage.
Display: surprisingly similar
Both phones use a 7.6-inch inner display.
The iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer screen, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a 5.5-inch cover display. Apple says both Duo displays use ProMotion, Always-On support and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Samsung’s Fold 8 uses a different screen shape, with a 10:16 cover display and 4:3 main display. Samsung positions that wider inner canvas around media and multitasking.
The practical difference will come down less to screen size and more to software.
Multitasking: Samsung is still ahead
Apple has finally introduced proper foldable multitasking.
On the iPhone Duo, Split View allows two apps side by side, two windows of the same app, saved app pairs and interaction with Siri while another app remains visible.
Samsung goes further.
One UI 9 supports two-way and three-way split views, letting users run multiple apps simultaneously on the main display. Samsung also integrates contextual features such as Now Nudge directly into multi-window workflows.
If you regularly want email, browser and notes visible together, Samsung currently has the stronger productivity setup.
Winner for multitasking: Galaxy Z Fold 8
Cameras: neither is a true camera flagship
The iPhone Duo has:
- 48MP main camera
- 48MP ultra-wide
- 2x optical-quality zoom from the main camera
- inner and outer front-camera options
Apple also uses the dual-screen design for features such as rear-camera selfies and subject preview.
Samsung’s Fold 8 has:
- 50MP main camera
- 50MP ultra-wide
- 2x optical-quality zoom
- 10MP cover-screen camera
- 10MP inner camera
The key limitation is that neither base model includes a dedicated long-range telephoto lens.
If camera performance is your absolute priority, Samsung’s Z Fold 8 Ultra or Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max may be more appropriate.
For the Duo vs Fold 8 specifically, the winner will require real camera testing.

Battery: Apple claims longer video playback
Apple does not publish a conventional milliamp-hour figure for the Duo in its launch announcement, but it says the dual-battery system delivers:
- Up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display
- Up to 44 hours on the outer display
- Up to 24 hours when both displays are used equally
Samsung lists a 4,800 mAh battery and claims up to 26 hours of video playback.
These figures are not directly comparable because Apple and Samsung use different testing methods.
Until independent battery testing is available, it would be misleading to call Apple the confirmed winner.
Size and portability: Samsung is very light
Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams and measures 4.5 mm thick when unfolded.
That is unusually light for a foldable.
Apple describes the Duo as its thinnest iPhone when open but does not present a directly comparable weight figure in the launch material cited here. Apple uses grade 5 titanium and a hinge made from more than 100 components.
This is one area where a hands-on comparison matters more than marketing specifications.
Durability: Apple makes a bold first attempt
Apple gives the iPhone Duo an IP68 rating, a titanium frame, Ceramic Shield protection and a strengthened folding display structure.
That is noteworthy for a first-generation Apple foldable.
Samsung has far more experience building foldable phones, and the Fold 8 uses Flex Titanium beneath the display, Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass.
The unknown is long-term hinge and crease performance.
A first-generation device can look excellent at launch and still reveal durability issues after months of use.
AI features: different ecosystems
Apple integrates the Duo with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, including personal context, onscreen awareness and actions across supported apps.
Samsung combines Galaxy AI with Gemini-based features. Its current tools include Photo Assist, Now Nudge and context-aware actions that can open apps in split view. Samsung also allows users to choose whether some personal-data processing happens on-device or in the cloud.
The better choice depends largely on your ecosystem.
If your life is already inside iCloud, Apple apps, AirPods and Mac, the Duo makes more sense.
If you rely on Google services, Windows and flexible Android multitasking, Samsung remains easier to integrate.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the iPhone Duo if:
- You already use Apple devices
- You want iOS on a foldable
- You care about Apple Pencil support
- You prefer Apple’s app ecosystem
- You are willing to pay more for a first-generation product
Choose the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if:
- You want mature foldable multitasking
- You regularly use three apps at once
- You prefer Android flexibility
- You want the lower starting price
- You do not want to wait until October
Bottom line
The iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8 comparison is closer than the price difference suggests.
Apple’s first foldable already matches Samsung on inner-screen size and brings some unusually strong features for a first-generation device, including IP68 protection, Apple Pencil support and a foldable-specific version of iOS.
But Samsung still has the practical advantage in multitasking, pricing and years of foldable experience.
For most existing iPhone users who have wanted a foldable without switching ecosystems, the Duo is the obvious choice.
For buyers who care more about productivity and value than operating system loyalty, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 currently looks like the more sensible buy.
